The Tradition of Giving Dried Fruit Baskets

The tradition of the 13 desserts is 100% Mediterranean and the number 13 appeared in the 1920s to describe the quantity of different desserts. Dried fruits are at the heart of traditions and Christmas is no exception! Originally, desserts were served at the end of the meal for the Christmas holidays and became 13 from 1925. In the 13 desserts we traditionally find mendiants, dates, figs, apricots, nougat, hazelnuts, walnuts and pistachios but also apples, pears…. They can vary according to the regions of Provence but they are always products from the Mediterranean Basin!

The end-of-year baskets reflect these 13 desserts and reconnect with traditions: eating dried fruits is a moment of sharing at the end of a meal with the whole family! Today, they are modernizing by varying the pleasures, adding sweets to the baskets but while keeping the base which is dried fruits. Between tradition and modernity, these 13 desserts will remain a moment of conviviality that will allow guests to discover the most beautiful flavors of the Mediterranean
